Location-based notifications in Google Wallet don't work

The history of Google Wallet is a long series of rebrandings:

  • In 2011, Google's first payment system was introduced as Google Wallet.
  • In 2015, Google presented its successor named Android Pay.
  • In 2018, Google Wallet was merged with Android Pay and renamed to Google Pay.
  • In 2022, Google Pay was integrated into a new app with the new name Google Wallet.

Somewhere along the way, the ability to activate Google Wallet passes based on location was lost. The current Google Wallet documentation does provide the option for all types of Google Wallet passes to specify multiple locations[] as LatLongPoint:

"locations": [
  {
    "latitude": number,
    "longitude": number
  }
],

However, the documentation immediately follows with:

Note: This field is currently not supported to trigger geo notifications.

All passes created with Passmeister integrate location data according to Google's specifications and are prepared for Google re-enabling location-based notifications in the future.
